On Monday, September 13th, 2005, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first implantable contact lens for nearsightedness. The lens implant is currently targeted for those patients who are not good LASIK candidates for various reasons including those with high amounts of nearsightedness with thin corneas.
On December 23, 2005, STAAR Surgical, the makers of the Visian ICL™, received FDA approval for their remarkable new intraocular lens. The Visian ICL™ is capable of correcting a wide range of nearsightedness (Myopia) without the removal or destruction of corneal tissue. If you are between the ages of 21 to 45, have moderate to severe nearsightedness and aren't a candidate for typical Laser Vision Correction procedures, this may be the perfect option for you.
